$38 million to boost research excellence at Monash

Research focused on the formation of the developing embryo and the impact of policy and geography on work disability are just some of the Monash University projects that will benefit from Australian Research Council (ARC) Grants of nearly $38 million.

Announced by The Honourable Dan Tehan, Minister for Education, on Tuesday 27 November, Monash University has received an unprecedented $37,908,079 as part of the latest round of ARC funding to support 92 Discovery and Linkage Projects in 2019.

Monash received a total of $26,309,266 for 65 Discovery Projects and a further $8,510,994 to support 22 Discovery Early Career Research Awards. An additional $3 million was granted to support two Linkage Projects and three Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities grants.

Monash is rated third highest for Discovery Projects and equal second for Discovery Early Career Research Awards in the Group of Eight. Monash was awarded the most funding of any university in Victoria.

This announcement follows more than $28.5 million in research grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in August which supported 52 projects in health-related fields.

“We’re grateful for the contribution of the Australian Research Council to support Monash’s endeavour to make a tangible difference in the global community through our research initiatives,” Professor Marc Parlange, Monash Provost and Senior Vice-President, said.

“The University’s continued success in attracting grant funding is a testament to the talent and dedication of our researchers, as well as our strong global reputation of contributing new knowledge that can change lives.”

Professor Margaret Gardner AO FASSA, President and Vice-Chancellor, congratulated the academics for their leadership and contribution to new knowledge, saying that the results demonstrated Monash’s commitment to growing research capacity on an international scale.

“Being able to solve some of the greatest global challenges requires world-class vision by world-class researchers. Excellence in research can lead to lasting and positive change, and our Australian Research Council grant recipients will be able to pursue this kind of impact,” Professor Gardner said.

“From advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity to family studies and media, I’m delighted that Monash University continues to be recognised as one of the world’s top research institutions across these important categories and others.”
